Fraser Fir

01

Fraser Fir

(Abies Fraseri)

Zone

4-6

Mature Size

60' height, 20-25' spread

Growth Rate

Slow

Light Requirement

 Full to partial sun

Tree Shape

Natural Christmas tree shape

Soil Type: Fraser fir requires soil that has a high fertility and excellent drainage, such as well-drained sand or sandy loam soil. Requires acid soil ranging between pH 5.2 and 5.8 and shows little tolerance to soil pH outside of this narrow range.Fraser fir cannot tolerate low soil fertility, wet soil or heavier clay soil.

02

Balsam Fir

(Abies Balsamea)

Zone

 3-5

Mature Size

70' height, 20' spread

Growth Rate

Slow

Light Requirement

Full to partial sun

Tree Shape

Symmetrically pyramidal to open

Soil Type: Moist, acidic soils. Placement near bodies of water so that its deeper roots can tap into the water table (or watering with an irrigation system, such as at Christmas tree farms) assists its summer survival, as does general shelter from the drying winds of summer.

Growth Rate

Slow-Medium

Light Requirement

Full sun

Tree Shape

Upright pyramidal

Soil Type:  Moist, acidic soils that may be organic, sandy, or loamy; the soils must not be poorly drained or wet. It is also adaptable to a variety of less than favorable conditions, including poor, clay, rocky, dry soils of acidic, neutral, or alkaline pH

White Spruce

(Picea Glauca)

Zone

2-6

Mature Size

Light Requirement

Full sun

Tree Shape

Upright pyramidal

Soil Type:  White Spruce prefers moist , acidic soils that may be organic, sandy, or loamy; the soils may be well-drained or moderately drained, but not wet. It is also adaptable to a variety of less favorable conditions, including poor, clay, rocky, dry soils of acidic, neutral, or alkaline pH.

60' height, 25' spread

Growth Rate

Slow

Light Requirement

Full sun

Tree Shape

Broad pyramidal base to conical crown

Soil Type: Acidic, moist loams with full sun, but adapts to a variety of conditions including shade, drought, hot and cold. It is flood intolerant and sensitive to soil compaction.

White Pine

(Pinus Strobus)

Zone

3-8

Mature Size

80' height, 40' spread

Growth Rate

Rapid

Light Requirement

Full sun

Tree Shape

 Irregular

Soil Type:  White Pine performs best in evenly moist, rich, well-drained, acidic soils. It is often intolerant of soils that are alkaline in pH and poorly drained. Needle chlorosis (yellowing) and stunted growth are prime symptoms of a soil-related problem.

09

Red Pine

(Pinus Resinosa)

Zone

2-5

Mature Size

50' height, 30' spread

Growth Rate

Medium

Light Requirement

Full sun

Tree Shape

Spreading and symmetrical

Soil Type:  Poor, sterile, acidic, sandy .Especially those that are sandy and gravelly, and therefore very well-drained. However, it does not like salt spray to its foliage, or salt deposition in its soil. It grows in zones 2 to 5, preferring regions that have cold climates in winter and cool climates in summer.
